Send a link via SMS
The short messaging service may be used not only for delivering text messages, but also to
provide web links to the message recipients. The WAP Forum
has formulated a first conception of mobile web (Wireless Application Protocol). It has developed
the special format of webpages for mobile phones (WAP pages) and the various types of web-related
services. One of these services is a WAP Push service. The idea of WAP Push was in delivering of
mobile web content from the content provider to the mobile phone user via SMS. WAP Push is
currently intensively used in the delivery of videos, melodies and other paid content to the
customers.
WAP-Push messages are usually sent by a content provider through SMSC, but this is not
the only way to deliver such messages. The mobile phone user may forward the link to another
person by clicking "Forward". The composition of push messages is not available in a handset,
but the message may be composed on the PC and then transferred to the recipient via the mobile
phone.
Sending of Push-SMS is one of the features of Headwind GSM Modem
Driver. To send such message, your mobile phone must be connected to the PC and it must be
capable to send short messages in PDU mode. Fortunately the software determines the SMS sending
mode automatically, so you do not need to know any technical details about your mobile phone.
To send a WAP Push message, you need to retrieve the URL of the webpage first. Not every webpage
may be correctly displayed by the mobile phone. Some mobile operators may disable display of
too large pages, some of them have their own content adaptation (usually a large page is
splitted into several smaller pages). The most of popular web services and blogs (such as
Yahoo, Myspace.com,
WordPress.com and many others) have the mobile-adapted
versions:
If there is no mobile version of the page, do not worry. There is a free content-adaptation
service from Google:
http://www.google.com/gwt/n
Just enter the URL of the webpage in a form and you will get the contents suitable for view
on a small screen of a handset.
After you have opened the mobile webpage in a web browser (see figure above), copy the page
location to the clipboard, start the Headwind SMS Communicator or
Headwind GSM Modem Driver and open the "Send SMS" dialog box
(Here is the short user guide to the software). Click the "WAP Push"
checkbox and paste the URL in the appropriate field. Then type the message comment and enter
the recipient number; your message is ready to be sent.
You can send an ordinary SMS by pasting the URL directly in the message text, either.
Many mobile phones have an "Extract URL" capability, so the recipient may extract the URL
and open it in the mobile phone web browser. This is up to your choice; if your recipient
could not extract the URL, it could not open the web page.
Now you can see that your recipient have the access to your blog everywhere. By using
Headwind SMS Suite you can amuse your friends with the latest blogs and interesting news
even if they are in a trip or even far from the computer.
