Sending SMS

Opening the dialog

The "Send SMS" dialog is opened by pressing a "Send SMS" button in the "SMS settings" tab of the control panel or by selecting a "Send SMS" menu item in the system menu. The message mode (text or PDU mode) is indicated in the title of the dialog.

Selecting the recipients

Type the phone numbers of recipients separated by comma in an appropriate field of the dialog. To select the recipients from the address book, press the "Get address" button, select the addresses and press "Use". Please note that every short message may be sent to only one recipient. The more recipients you indicate, the more SMS will be sent.

Phone number types

There are several types of number (ToN) in GSM network:

  • Unknown is the default type;
  • International is used to send SMS to an ordinary mobile phone. This is the most common format, the number begins with prefix "+" followed by the country code;
  • National is used by some SMSC to route SMS inside the country. May be used for short codes;
  • Network-specific format is used by SMSC for internal purposes;
  • Short code may be used for the sending messages to short numbers.

The "auto" setting allows the application to select the format itself. It is not recommended to setup the ToN manually unless you encounter problems with sending of SMS.

Setting SMS contents

The SMS contents must be typed in the big edit box. Normally, a short message may not exceed 160 ASCII-symbols or 80 UNICODE-symbols. However you can send longer messages which will be sent as concatenated SMS. The text below the edit box shows you the number of characters, the coding of your message and the number of segments for the concatenated SMS. Please note that not all phones support concatenated messages and UNICODE.

The "Flash" flag indicates that the SMS must be shown immediately on the screen of a recipient's mobile phone.

To send a WAP Push message, click the "WAP Push" flag and enter the URL in an appropriate field. WAP Push may be sent only in PDU mode. The encoding of a WAP Push message is always UTF-8.

Sending message

After the SMS is setup, click the "Send" button to send a message. If you are connected to the modem, the SMS will be sent immediately. Otherwise, it will be placed in the outbox queue. If an error occurred during the sending of an SMS, you will be notified immediately by a balloon tip. The diagnostics may be done with the help of a log file.
