Retrieving the serial port name

Bluetooth connection

If your mobile phone is connected with the PC via Bluetooth, you may send SMS through a virtual serial port. Please ensure that the Bluetooth dongle is plugged in the USB port of your computer and the connection is properly established.

The name of the serial port may be retrieved in the following way. Double-click the small bluetooth icon in the system tray and select the "COM Ports" tab.

This tab contains names and descriptions of virtual serial ports; find the currently connected mobile phone and the OUTGOING serial port (COM9 in the figure), then type the name of this serial port in the control panel. Now the port name is configured and you may click the "Connect" button. The connection will be established in some seconds and you will see the corresponding balloon tip.

Do not see the Bluetooth icon in the system tray? Check that the Bluetooth dongle is plugged in the USB port. If the icon still do not appear in tray, select Start, "Control panel" and double click the "Bluetooth" icon.

The Bluetooth control panel may look different from the above picture, because the Bluetooth drivers are issued by different manufacturers. Here is a detailed instruction on the detection of your Bluetooth driver and connection with the mobile phone.

Cable connection

To connect the mobile phone or GSM modem with the PC via cable, you may need a device driver (it must be delivered on a CD with the mobile phone or the cable). After the installation of the device, select Start->Control Panel->Phone and modem options. A window with currently installed modems must appear.

Find the installed modem in the "Modems" tab, then click "Properties". A window with modem properties must appear.

The serial port name and the baud rate are found in the "Modem" tab.

If you still have problems with retrieving the serial port name, select Start, "Control Panel", double-click the "System" icon and click the "Device manager" button. In the device manager, open the "Ports (COM and LPT)" section and look for the name of the serial port there (try all port names until the desired result is achieved).
