Modem properties
There are many models of GSM modems and mobile phones and many settings controlling
the sending and receiving of short messages. Headwind GSM modem driver automatically determines
the most appropriate settings of the modem and configures the device after the connection.
The "Modem properties" tab may be used for the tuning of the modem automatic configuration or for
switching to the manual configuration.
When the modem is disconnected, all modem features are in the "unknown" state. To
connect with the modem, press the "Update" button.
The left part of the tab contains some modem features, which are automatically determined
after the connection. These modem features are used for the automatic configuration.
If the flag in a checkbox is unset, the feature is not determined and a default value
is used during the configuration. It is not recommended to uncheck these
checkboxes, however they may be unchecked in the case of configuration errors.
Feature description
- SMS support - indicates whether the modem supports SMS according to GSM 3.40 specification
or supports additional SMS funcions (Phase 2+). The command "AT+CSMS=?" is sent to the modem.
- SMS modes - shows PDU mode and text mode support ("AT+CMGF=?").
The normal operating mode which allows modem to send SMS in UNICODE (UCS2) format and
WAP Push messages is PDU mode. However if the modem does not support PDU mode, the
text mode may be used to send short messages as well.
- Received SMS - shows how the modem indicate incoming SMS ("AT+CNMI=?").
Possible values are "index" (notification by index in the modem memory) and "content" (the modem
sends SMS directly to the PC). If the modem can't indicate incoming SMS, the value "none" is shown.
- Error reporting - indicates how the modem reports errors ("AT+CMEE=?").
Possible values are "numeric" (the modem returns the error number), "text" (the modem returns
the error text) and "none" (the modem just says that an error is occurred).
- Deleting - indicates how the modem can delete messages ("AT+CMGD=?").
The value "all" means that it can delete all messages, "by index" means deleting by index, "none"
means the modem can't delete messages.
- USSD support - shows whether the GSM device supports USSD commands and receive replies to them.
If Headwind GSM modem driver can't determine the feature, a "failed" state is shown. In this case,
it is recommended to uncheck the corresponding check box and reconnect the modem.
Informational fields
- Device - the name of the device (reply to the command "AT+CGMM").
- Signal strength - the strength of the GSM signal in percents (reply to the command
"AT+CSQ").
Switching between the automatic and manual configurations
The modem is automatically configured when the flag "Auto-detect optimal sending mode" is checked.
In this case, the most of fields in the "SMS settings" tab
are disabled. If you wish to allow the manual configuration and setup the SMS settings yourself,
uncheck this flag (this is recommended only for advanced users in the case of communication
errors).
