SMS and communication settings

Serial port settings

Before connecting to the GSM modem, a serial port must be configured. The serial port name (or the name of a virtual serial port in the case of Bluetooth or infrared port connection) must be selected in an appropriate combo box. If the port name is not COM1-COM10, type the port name in a combo box. If the serial port requires additional settings (baud rate, number of data bits, parity or number of stop bits), setup these values in appropriate combo boxes below.

The "Timeout" edit box contains the timeout in seconds for waiting a reply from the modem. The appropriate value for the timeout is 10-30 sec.

SMS settings

The SMS settings must be used only if a manual configuration of the modem is chosen ("Auto-detect' checkbox in the "Properties" tab). Normally, these settings (except the deleting mode) are disabled and you should not change them.

  • Sending mode - text mode or PDU mode. The default mode is the PDU mode, when you can send SMS containing UNICODE letters and WAP-Push messages. The text mode allows you to send only short messages containing ASCII symbols.
  • Incoming SMS handling - how to handle incoming SMS. The available options are: notification by content (the modem directly sends the SMS content to the PC), notification by index (the modem sends the index of a message in the modem memory), polling (Headwind GSM modem driver asks the modem for new messages periodically) and ignoring new SMS. The polling must be used only if the modem does not support notification.
  • Delete incoming - you can tell the modem to delete all SMS after receiving, delete only received SMS, or do not delete incoming SMS. Please note that not all modems support deleting all SMS.
  • Polling memory - indicate the memory used for polling (SIM card or phone memory). This parameter must be set only if the polling mode is chosen. It is recommended to check where the modem saves received SMS by listing the phone memory.
  • Polling time - time in seconds before requests for new SMS in a polling mode. The recommended value is 30-300 sec.
  • Delete SMS after - you can send the deleting command to the modem after some SMS are received. This option is enabled only if the "Delete All" option is chosen.

Buttons

There are "Send SMS", "Connect" and "View log" buttons. Before sending a message, the modem must be connected. The "View log" button opens the modem log in a text editor. Use this log to make diagnostics in the case of errors.
